On Magar and Mukunda Sen of Palpa

By BK Rana

1) According to Bal Chandra Sharma [NEPALKO AITIHASIK RUPREKHA] Ratna Sen was the last King of Chhitaurgarh, Rajasthan, India.

2) His oldest son Jaya Sen fled and took shelter in Prayag. Jaya Sen's descendants while again chased by the Muslims arrived "Rib+di+kot", neighboring kingdom of Palpa via Butwal, Rishing and Ghiring. [Magar Kings are cited as "Bhure Takure Rajas" by historians].

3) Sharma has also written that Rudra Sen defeated Palpali King. But who was that Palpali King? Magars? How did the lone Rudra Sen fight with the Palpali King? There is no mentioning at all. Sharma's history is a biased one, lacks foundation. Unclear history !

4) MUKUNDA SEN is described as a Sen Magar in Naradsmriti Granth [Keshar Library, Kathmandu]. He had attacked Kathmandu twice in 1521 BS. And in Chaitra 11, 1522 BS he attacked and annexed Kirtipur. He is described as MAGAR RAJADHIRAJ MUKUNDA SEN.

5) GOPAL RAJVANSHAVALI also cites SENS as MAGARS. There are some SEN MAGARS in Nepal today.

6) KUSUNDA ORIGIN MYTH: Once upon a time there was a king who had three sons. Upon the death of the father the first son became king. Whatever he did everything turned out unsuccessful. So the second son went to him and argued, "Whatever you did that came out bad so you are no longer King. You live in the jungle begging and hunting". This is how the oldest son became Kusunda. The second son in turn became the king. Everything he did resulted in good. The king went to offer a pig to Chandi deity. He didn't find a person to kill the pig. The third son said "I will kill it". And he killed it. The descendants from third son became Magars. The descendants of the second son became Thakuris. [This version seems to be influenced by Shikhar Nath Subedi's "Thargotra Prabaravali", a booklet published from Banaras India, could be found in some bookshops in Bhotahiti, Kathmandu].

7) RAJTARANGINI AND ARAMUDI : It is the oldest written authority for the history of various dynasties which ruled KASHMIR from the earliest period down to the time of the author who began to write his chronicle in SHAKA YEAR 1070 [AD 1148 , BS 1204] "Atha Aramudi iti prashiddha mayabi Nepaldeshasya Raja" [AD 782 - 813] [KASMIREITIHAS pp 99]. Prof. Raja Ram Subedi and Prof. Jagadish Chandra Regmi believe Aramudi as Magar King of Kali Gandaki Area.

8) MAGGWAR BISHAYA: [Nepal Sambat 221 or BS 1157] "Shree Dhanap Nayak Shree Shoab Rane". Mahesh Raj Panta and Aishowryadhar Sharma recognize him as RANA MAGAR. Dhan Bzra Bazrachayra also recognized Shohab Rane as Rana Magar.

9) "VIRSTAMBHA" - MEMORIAL IN DULLU DAILEKH : Thapa Magars are cited as rulers suggesting that they were also in great numbers. Prof. Ram Niwas Panday believes Khas are descendants of Thapa Magars of Dullu Dailekh. Khas are also known as Thakuris.

10) F. B. Hamilton, Dor Bahadur Bista, Rhisikesh Shah believe Kings as the Magars. Eden Vansitart, Percival Landon, John Whelpton, Jiro kawakita, Brian H. Hodgson also have written the same way.

11) Whatever be the relationship with MUKUNDA SEN or the King makes no difference to the MAGARS of today.

hiya !
nice to know about this site, i was curious know the origin of magars , but still its doubt and complex,i guess , our origin was mixed with times with intruders. I feel these a very close link of some magar language with tibetian and other noprthern language, but still plenty magars are appear over eastern nepals and further east, was is that magars moved east wards while gaining infantry of soldiers by Prithivi narayan shah?? if it is so why plenty magars in high hills of myagdi and rolpa and Rukum which are semi mountain region, is that they took the title for becomong magars ? or they were the original magars ? but cant speak magars, why ?and i can guess there is strong language link between kaike and kham magars and kham magars with central magars. It is no doubt that sen are magars because i have my fren who is magar, Sen magar. he can speak Palpali magar, and as i am pun stil i cant.
any way we have to go minute research for the origin of magars.for this we have to make a group of people who is devoted for this kind of interests. To run this group we have to make donations and charities so that research goes on for success.

Another interesting article
http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/uncategorized/nepali-author-demolishes-kings-blue-blood-claim_10053278.html

By Sudeshna Sarkar
Kathmandu, May 27 (IANS) On the verge of being stripped of his crown and evicted from the royal palace, Nepal’s distressed King Gyanendra now faces another blow - the demolition of the “myth” that his dynasty is descended from India’s Rajputs, a dynasty of warrior kings known for their valour and blue blood. Nepali author and researcher Subodh Kumar Singh contends that the Shah kings of Nepal, once revered as the incarnation of Hindu god Vishnu, are actually the descendants of the Magars, a Mongoloid people who inhabited western Nepal and occupied a low position in social hierarchy. They were dismissively described as ‘matwalis’ - a people known for their drinking prowess.

Singh, a political specialist at the American Embassy in Kathmandu, has been researching for over a decade the history of various communities who enjoyed a position of power in the past but then lost their glory and plummetted to the bottom of the social ladder.

In his new book, “The return of the Mauryas”, Singh says the Shah kings began creating the fiction that they were descended from the Rajput kings of India in order to hide their origin and commend greater reverence from their subjects.

However, several pieces of evidence belie the claim.

“During his last days, Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of the Shah dynasty, gathered all his relatives, courtiers and officers around him and advised them on how to conduct their work and themselves,” Singh told IANS.

“The last advice was recorded and still exists as Divya Upadesh (divine advice).”

“On his death bed, the king told the people around him, I am a Magar king. When you face death, you dispense with pretence and speak the truth. The king’s dying declaration is an indication that the Shah kings were not of blue blood.”

The advice was collected and published by a Catholic missionary who had come to Nepal in the 1960s, after the mystic land was gradually opened to foreigners.

Father L.F. Stiller’s book, “Prithvi Narayan Shah in the light of divya upadesh”, had to be published from India’s Bihar state in 1968 as, Singh says wryly, it would have been impossible to publish it in Nepal.

Even Singh’s book had to await the fall of King Gyanendra’s absolute regime and the restoration of democracy.

Singh points out a tradition that still remains in western Nepal as further proof.

“The Shah kings’ family deities - Goddess Manokamana and Gorkha Kali - have Magar priests,” he says. “If you are a Rajput, you would not have a Magar priest.”

Matrimonial alliances also indicate the dynasty’s humble stocks.

“The Magar kings had the tradition of marrying the daughters of Tharu kings. Prithvi Narayan Shah himself married a Tharu princess called Kaushalyavati.”

Though the Tharus are the kinsmen of the Buddha, who came from a royal family, the tides of fate turned them into slaves who are now regarded as untouchables in Nepal.

Later, the class-conscious Shah kings departed from the tradition and sought to marry Rajputs from India or the aristocracy in Nepal.

When Nepal holds the historic first meeting of its constituent assembly Wednesday and formally proclaims the kingdom to be a republic, King Gyanendra, overnight reduced to a commoner, would have his forefathers’ vanity to blame as much as his own overriding ambition.

“The Shah kings completely forgot their roots,” says Singh. “If they had remained true to their origin and kept themselves allied to the Magars, Tharus and Kirants, who form the majority, they would not have come to this pass,” Singh said.

“But they created fictitious genealogy and DNA and so, in the end, they had to face the dire consequences.”

Prof. Ram Niwas Panday believes Khas are descendants of Thapa Magars of Dullu Dailekh. Khas are also known as Thakuris.
----------------------
This guy Panday is just a Fai-futti, not a historian. Khas descents of Thapa magar, what a joke? Khas kings are mentioned in Dwapar Yug, Mahabharata war and he is telling descents of Thapa Magars. It could be other ways, like Thapa Maga/Chhetri surname given by Khas Malla Kings. Khas Kings were always in cooperation Magar Rajautas and bulk of Khas armies. Khas Empire was a legendry which gave us Khas castes (Bahuns, Chhetris, Thakuris, Sanyasis, Kami, Sarkis, Dmais, Badis, gaines etc.) and a great language Khas-kura or Nepali. Do not confuse us with baseless stories.
